Eta Delta at Valparaiso University
Kappas at Valpo understand the importance of volunteering and realize that it only takes one person to make a positive difference. Because of this, Eta Delta Kappas are involved in numerous organizations on and off campus, and take advantage of various service opportunities. Philanthropy 1-2-3 1.) The Rose McGill Fund Our chapter has supported the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation with financial gifts and Rose McGill magazine subscription sales to help fund scholarships, confidential aid, education and training, and support of our two museums. "Every Kappa sister should have support in times of need." The Rose McGill Fund, established in 1922, has many programs that give confidential aid to deserving Kappas of all ages who suddenly and unexpectedly find themselves in financial need due to misfortune or illness. During the 2004-2006 biennium, the Rose McGill Programs provided $696,494 in support. 2.) Philanthropic Events
Kappa National Philanthropy: Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), our official philanthropic partner, has been supported through the donation of thousands of books and volunteer hours to Boys and Girls Clubs, elementary schools and hospitals. Margaret McNamara established Reading Is Fundamental in 1966. RIF is an international organization that works towards the distribution of books and reading motivational organization that teaches children to read as well as encouraging them to keep up with their literacy skills throughout their lifetimes. Kappa adopted RIF as its national philanthropy in 2004. Valpo’s Kappas support RIF through donating books, tutoring and reading to children at Hilltop Neighborhood House and the Midwest Center. Eta Delta Philanthropy: Kappa Boat Regatta: Kappa Boat Regatta is an annual event that takes place in the Athletic Recreation Center. Teams create a life size boat and two people race the boat across the pool. Awards are given for best time, most creative theme, and spectacular sink. Proceeds go to RIF. Kappa Kasino: Kappa Kasino is an annual casino night held at the Reiner Center, in Valparaiso. Students and community members of Valparaiso play black jack and poker. All proceeds are split between the Reiner Center and RIF. The Reiner Center is an after-school care facility. It is supported solely by donations and run by volunteers. 3.) Serving the Greater Good “[Kappa women] develop and participate in programs and activities to help make a better world. [We strive to] reach out to lend a hand to those eager to make better lives for themselves.” Kappa Kappa Gamma participates in the Adopt a Highway program. Throughout the academic year, Kappa cleans a section of Indiana’s Route 2. We are environmentally aware, and happy to do our part to keep Indiana clean. In the spring, we walk for The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Kappas are dedicated to helping find a cure. The women of Kappa Kappa Gamma participate in other sorority and fraternity events including, but not limited to Sigma Chi’s derby days, Theta Chi’s 24 hour basketball tournament, Kappa Delta’s Wingo, Delta Delta Delta’s Valpo at Bat, Phi Kappa Psi’s Phi Psi 500, and Baccus/Gamma’s mocktails competition. Each of these event’s proceeds benefit the organization’s charitable focus. In addition to these activities, Kappas individually volunteer for organizations such as Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and Hands to Love Congenital Hand Camp. We are passionately dedicated to the organizations we participate in, and are excited to continue helping our community grow.
