Omega chapter at the University of Kansas
Philanthropy 1-2-3
As individuals with time, talents and treasures, Kappas first support our sisters; second, we participate in local service projects; and third, we serve the greater good.
Community service is one of the most important and most rewarding parts of greek life at KU. Omega Kappas participate in numerous campus and community projects whose benefits stay local. The chapter also joins with all Kappas across the world in supporting the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation, and Kappa's national philanthropy, Reading Is Fundamental.
Kappa Klassic
Every spring Kappa holds a golf tournament called Kappa Klassic. Holes are sponsored by local and regional businesses and gifts are raffled off to players. Kappa Klassic occurs the same weekend as dad's weekend to give dad's a better opportunity to play in the tournament. Proceeds from Kappa Klassic benefit Natural Ties, which is a student-run organization that establishes relationships between KU students and local adults who have developmental disabilities. Natural Ties is a fast growing campus organization that was started by a Kappa.
Rock Chalk Revue
Our chapter women donate service hours to benefit Rock Chalk Revue, the University of Kansas' annual philanthropy that raises approximately $50,000 each year for the Douglas County United Way. Fraternities and sororities pair up to create 20-minute original musicals. The five best shows are presented in the Rock Chalk Revue event in the spring, and awards are presented to the chapters that have contributed the most community service hours. Many have credited Rock Chalk Revue as their fondest Kappa memory.
Reading is Fundamental (RIF)
Kappa adopted RIF as its national philanthropy in 2004. RIF's highest priority is to serve the nation's under-served children and families through the development and delivery of literacy programs and campaigns that motivate youth to read regularly. Since its foundation in 1966, RIF has reached more than 4.5 million children around the world.
The University of Kansas Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma supports RIF during recruitment by collecting children's books and donating them to the Brookcreek Learning Center in Lawrence. As well as donating children's books, Kansas Kappa holds a RIF event once a semester where members go to local elementary schools to enforce the importance of reading by reading along side the kids.
Foundation
Our chapter also supports the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation with financial gifts and Rose McGill magazine sales. These contributions help continue the work of the Foundation in the areas of scholarships, education and training and support of our Heritage Museum in Columbus, Ohio, and the Stewart House in Monmouth, Illinois.
